Ambassador dr Zlatko Lagumdzija welcomed Mr. Guy Ryder, Under-Secretary-General for Policy of the UN at the Ambassadorial Meeting as the Chair of the EEG Regional Group
30th January 2024 – Permanent Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the United Nations, Ambassador Zlatko Lagumdzija had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Guy Ryder, Under-Secretary-General for Policy in the Executive Office of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the Ambassadorial Meeting as the Chair of the EEG Regional Group
In his Capacity as the Chair of the Eastern European Regional Group (EEG) for the Month of January 2024, Ambassador Lagumdzija invited the Under-Secretary Guy Ryder as Briefer and Guest of Honor to the Group’s monthly meeting hosted by the Chair. Under-Secretary-General Ryder provided the first-hand update on the preparations for the Summit of the Future, to be hosted by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres on the occasion of the 79 Session of the UN General Assembly in September 2024 in New York.
The Summit is tasked to adopt an action-orientated Outcome Document, a Pact for the Future that will address burning global issues like reform of the peacebuilding architecture, achieving the Agenda 2030, and other institutional reforms, including the reform of the UN Security Council.
Well attended by Permanent Representatives and Heads of Missions of the EEG Member States, the discussion with the Under-Secretary Ryder was focused on expectations and inputs of UN Member States in view of finding multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow.
Ambassador Lagumdzija underscored the importance of the establishment of efficient monitoring and follow-up instruments for the implementation of the Summit’s decisions. All participants expressed their gratitude to be provided this special briefing in addition to the regular issues discussed at Regional Group’s meetings, which include update on the candidature and elections topics and Chair’s activities representing the Group in communication with UN institutions.
The EEG members of the UN Security Council (Russian Federation and Slovenia) briefed the Group on the activities of the Security Council during the month of January and provided an outlook on the planned activities of the Security Council for the month of February 2024, with special focus on possible outcomes of negotiations aiming to end the war in Gaza.
